Hurricane Isabel - Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
In the summer of 1999, the lighthouse at Cape Hatteras was moved 2,900 feet to a new location 1,600 feet from the shore. The first image below includes the old location in the upper right and the new location in the lower left.
Here is an enlargement of the old location of the lighthouse. It stood quite near the current shore line in an area now marked with a ring of stones (which I've labeled).
And here's an enlargement of the new location of the lighthouse. As you can see, the area didn't even have sand washed onto it during the storm.
