Dynastes tityus - Female

Eastern Hercules Beetle, Rhinoceros Beetle, Unicorn Beetle

See the Clemson University Arthropod Museum for information on Dynastes tityus.

The Eastern Hercules beetle, a member of the Scarab family (Scarabaeidae), is the largest beetle in the United States. This specimen was found by Dot Hartley in southwestern Virginia (north of Mt. Airy, NC) in September, 2002. It is 1 3/4 inches (45 mm) long, and black and greenish in color. The mail of the species, although similar in coloration, is easily distinguished from the female by its long horn (See Info).
